Prompt: Write about a time when you were judged unfairly.

Prompt: A time I was judged unfairly was when I didn't complete an assignment in class. It was a Friday and my teacher had assigned an assignment that I didn't want to do, but it was designed to help us study for an exam. I chose not to do it in class and thought that I would do it over the weekend as it wasn't graded and only for review. When my teacher saw that I hadn't done anything (I was working on a different assignment), she got mad and asked why I hadn't done anything, even though many others had also not done anything. Summary: Today in class we completed a common lit. Reflection: I didn't really enjoy the article that the common lit was about.

Write about a truth you were afraid to accept.

Prompt: A truth that I was afraid to accept was that I have to decide on what to do in college. I don't really know what I want to do yet so I keep putting off thinking about it. I know that I need to pick something soon because I am a Junior. I am afraid to accept this because I don't want to pick the wrong thing and spend the rest of my life doing something that I don't enjoy. Summary: Today in class we continued learning about the rhetorical appeals. Reflection: I remember learning about this last year.

Write about a fear you have overcome.

Prompt: A fear that I have overcome is the fear of driving. When I was younger, I was scared about the fact that I would have to drive someday. I worried about being on the road with other cars and was scared of crashing. I am not the best driver, but I am less scared of driving now because I have more practice. Summary: Today in class we read an article and found the claims within it. Reflection: I didn't mind the assignment and thought it was not too difficult.

Prompt: As you grow older and face new experiences, what issue or topic do you think you'll have to stand up and debate most often, whether with friends, family, or society?

Prompt: I will most likely have to debate the issue of climate change the most. I will have to debate what to do about it because it will likely be an important issue in politics in the future. Also, people in my family have different opinions about what to do about climate change. This will cause me to have to debate them about their opinions on the topic. Summary: Today in class we learned about the types of arguments and did a worksheet on it. Reflection: I thought that it was interesting learning about the types of arguments.

Imagine you are learning about Hispanic/Latino heritage for the very first time. What would you be curious to know about the traditions, foods, music, or celebrations?

Prompt: If I was learning about Hispanic/Latino heritage for the first time I would want to know about what foods are common for that culture. I would want to know where the foods came from and what they signify in the culture. I would also want to know what some celebrations are in Hispanic culture. There are many holidays in German culture such as Oktoberfest and I would want to know what holidays are like that in Hispanic culture. Summary: Today we continued learning about how to write an essay. Reflection: I knew a lot of the techniques already however I learned that there are a lot more steps to editing than I thought.

After viewing your classmates’ poem posters, select one presentation that caught your attention. Describe what you enjoyed about it or something new you learned from their work.

Prompt: One presentation that caught my attention was Hani's presentation. It compared basketball to falling water on a waterfall. His use of figurative language helped get the point across.  I thought that was a very unique way of describing his love for the game and it made it memorable.  Summary: Today we read our poems. Reflection: I thought that my poem could have been better if I had put more effort into it.

Of today’s 15 vocabulary words, which three do you think you will use the most in your speaking and writing this semester? Explain why each word feels useful or powerful to you.

Prompt: The three words from the vocab list that I am most likely to use are: aesthetic, affinity, and affluence. Aesthetic is a word that I might use because I am already familiar with it and, depending on the topic, it may be used in our informational writing. I might use affinity because it stood out to me and I could use it to describe someone being good at something. Affluence might be useful to me in a different class as we are talking we are learning about slavery and the slave owners could be described as affluent. Summary: Today in class we learned the steps to writing an informational essay. Reflection: I think I will use the bubble chart for my essays.

It’s Homecoming Week! 🎉 What do you love most about being part of the Lakeside community? How do you show off your school spirit? What is your favorite Homecoming tradition or event?

Prompt: The thing I love most about being part of the Lakeside community is the sports community. There are a lot of teams and the players support each other. I show school spirit by sometimes participating in school spirit days and doing school sports. My favorite homecoming tradition is character day because a lot of the teachers dress up in funny costumes. Summary: Today in class we took a test on "Constantly Risking Absurdity" Reflection: I did well on the test

Which learning method do you enjoy the most? Class discussions, worksheet work, or hands-on actvities. Select one and tell why.

Prompt: The learning method that I enjoy the most is hands-on activities. Those are the most fun because you get to work with what you are learning about. Making projects or looking at videos about a topic make it easier to learn because they make the learning more interesting. Just reading the information is boring and makes it easy to forget. Summary: Today in class we continued working on our poem projects. Reflection: Writing poems is difficult because you have to put a deeper meaning into the text.

You are currently working on a soundtrack for selected Emily Dickinson poems. With that in mind, if asked to choose a song to describe your life right now, which song would you select and why?

Prompt: A song that I would chose to represent my life right now is "9-5" by Dolly Parton. I chose this song because it is about the monotony of working everyday and not feeling like you are getting anywhere. This song represents my current school life because every day there is more work and it doesn't really end. From when I wake up to when I go to sleep I am doing something and that gets a little stressful. Summary: Today in class we took a test on Emily Dickinson Poetry. Reflection: We didn't really do much productive today.

Which aspect of creating a poem do you enjoy the most? Tell what it is and explain why.

Prompt: I like finding words that rhyme with each other when creating the poem. It is fun because the end result sounds a lot better than what a normal sentence would sound like. Finding words that rhyme also forces me to use my vocabulary more as I need to think of words that would sound similar and would fit in the context of the poem. Although it can be difficult to use, using rhyme in poetry makes it more interesting to read. Summary: Today in class we started working on our poems. Reflection: It is difficult to write a poem as a lot of thought has to go into each word.

After reading Lawrence Ferlinghetti's poem "Constantly Risking Absurdity," which explores the poet's daring craft, write about your most absurd personal experience. Describe a single, specific incident that felt ridiculously bold or foolish. Ensure your response is vivid, concise, and captures the essence of absurdity.

Prompt: I do not know what the most absurd thing that has ever happened to me is but an absurd thing that happened to me recently was due to the school's administration. My bus arrived at school after the tardy bell had already rung in the past I would get a late bus pass and go to class. That day, however, I still had to get a hero pass and ended up being even later to class. This is absurd because it is completely unreasonable for me to get a hero pass (that can lead to punishment if it happens too often) for something that was out of my control. Summary: Today in class we read a poem and answered questions about it. Reflection: The poem was in an interesting style and it was cool to see the tightrope walker video.

If you were to compose a poem about one aspect of your life, which topic would it fall into and what would your overall life's message be?

Prompt: If I were to compose a poem about my life, it would about just pushing through. A lot of the goals I have in life and some of the problems that I have had can be achieved by setting aside the time everyday to show up and make sure that I get it done. This would likely fall into the topic of life or personal growth as it would be about my goals in life. The overall message would be to not give up and to follow your goals. Summary: Today in class we worked on our connections between songs and Emily Dickinson poetry and analysed some of her quotes. Reflection: The quotes that we looked at today had a lot of meaning and they talked about all parts of life.

You’ve been in American Literature for 4.5 weeks now. How has the class been going for you so far?

Prompt: This class has been going well for me. I have been able to stay on top of my work for the most part and this has allowed me to maintain an A in the class. I try to put effort into all of my assignments and the poems that we read in class are not super interesting to me but I don't mind learning about them. I like that I have a few friends in this class as well. Summary: Today we read 3 poems from Emily Dickinson. Reflection: I learned about how there are different perspectives when it comes to death and how people feel when they die.

Describe one thing that makes you different from other people.

Prompt: One thing that makes me different from other people is that I have lived in 3 different countries. I was born in Germany and soon after my family moved to England. After a year in England I moved to America for a year and then moved back to England. After 6 years in England I moved to America in 2017 which his where I now live. This makes me different from other people because I have seen what it is like to live in places other than where I am now and this makes me understand the world better. Summary: I wasn't here Reflection: I wasn't here
